Description
The Badger Chevron site is located at mile 0.5 of Badger Road in North Pole, Alaska. The site is currently operating as a Tesoro retail fuel sales and service station. Six underground storage tanks (USTs) were originally present on-site: (1) 500-gallon waste oil tank, (2) unused 10,000 gallon tank, (3) 2,000-gallon unleaded gasoline tank, (4) 2,000-gallon diesel tank, (5) 4,000-gallon regular gasoline tank, and (6) 8,000-gallon unleaded gasoline tank. In 1992 line tightness testing was performed. The line to the 2,000-gallon gasoline tank failed. In October of 1993, three of the USTs were excavated and removed; the 500-gallon waste oil tank, the unused 10,000-gallon tank and the 2,000-gallon gasoline tank. In September-October 1995, the remaining three USTs were excavated and removed, along with associated piping, dispenser pumps and island. Extensive soil and groundwater contamination was identified during the 1995 removal action.

Following the removal action, a new 5,000-gallon, double walled AST was installed with new pumps, dispenser island, total containment piping, and a leak detection system. A 12,000-gallon tri-compartment UST was installed in July 1996, replacing the 5,000-gallon AST. Approximately 840-cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soils were excavated and stockpiled on-site during the 1993 and 1995 tank removal activities. A site assessment was performed in 1995 and reviewed/rewritten in 1996. A release investigation was performed in 2001 to determine the nature and extent of soil and groundwater contamination. Included as part of the investigation were drinking water sampling, groundwater sampling, and segregation and treatment of the stockpiled soil. Stockpile segregation, sampling, excavation and removal took place during 2001 and 2002. A total of 721.1 tons of petroleum contaminated soil was transported off-site and thermally remediated.

In 2003 a soil vapor extraction system was installed at the site as an interim cleanup action. The system actively removes volatile contaminants from the subsurface by pulling out the vapors from the soil. Additional groundwater and drinking water well samples were also collected to monitor water quality in this area. The facility continues to receive grants through the State of Alaska Financial Assistance Program to fund cleanup activities.

Public Health and Environmental Concerns
The contaminants of concern (COCs) are primarily petroleum; diesel, gasoline and gasoline components (BTEX). Chlorinated solvents from an unknown source have also been identified during drinking water and groundwater sampling. Petroleum contaminated soil is remains on-site. Extensive impacts to the groundwater have been identified both on and off-site.

Current Status
Further assessment work is required to completely characterize the site. A soil vapor extraction system was installed in the fall of 2003 and remains operational.
